La vía Augusta Romana
The road Augusta Romana

We walk by a route of high historical value, the ancient Road Augusta roman, that went of Cádiz to Rome and that in the actuality is recovering . The stretch that propose form splits of the stage XXIV of the footpath in Catalonia, the last before going in in France. It is a flat route that, at the end, rises to arrive to the collado of Panissars, the place of main interest of the stretch. Along the way can see rests of the ancient shod roman, with the
Marks of the cars that in another period visited it.

The Romans arrived to the Iberian peninsula by the port of Empúries to the year 218 to. C. The emperor Augusto was the manager to recover ancient ways, to link them and create the Road Augusta, the main axis of the Mediterranean arch, that, with a length of 2.725 km, carried of Cádiz to Rome. The roman engineers looked for always places of little desnivel: this is the case, for example, of the collado of Panissars, that only has 568 m of altitude. The roads and highways built later followed the traced of the roman roads, reason that explains that the route pass parallel to these big road infrastructures. It exists an ambitious project comunitario of the European program INTERREG III B to recover this road. In Catalonia participates in the same the Department of Environment of the Generalitat, that has foreseen to do a total of 24 stages crossing the territory of south to north and going through places of so much interest like the ancient Tarraco (Tarragona).

The collado of Panissars is a place of big historical interest. In a radius of 500 m find the rests of monuments honoríficos, like the trophies of Pompeyo and the altar of César. The archaeologic rests that can see correspond very probably to the mansio of the Summum Pyrenaeum. Also they find here the rests of the mediaeval monastery benedictino of Santa Maria of Panissars, the strong ofBellegarde, a French fortress of the 17th century, and a military cemetery French. It is worthwhile to approach to the castle, from where can appreciate a glorious panoramic of the Canigó, the plain of the Rosellón and the valley of the Llobregat.

In The Jonquera is worth it to visit the mill of oil that finds inside the centre of information of the saw of the Albera (Can Laporta, tel. 972 555 258), to the start of the route, where also can us inform of other itineraries inside this zone protected. Very near it finds the castle of Requesens, a work of big dimensions and with numerous defensive elements.

To achieve the start of the travesía, by the To-2 or by the highway AP-7 until arriving toThe Jonquera. Once in the centre of the location, can leave the car in the parking signposted and free that finds beside the river, behind the City council, in the square Nova. From the parking it is necessary to head to the street Major, by the side of the garden of infancy. We arrive like this directly to the number 2 of the quoted street, where finds Can Laporta, the information centre of the saw of the Albera. From Can Laporta, follow the yellow and blue signaling along the street Major until the street Miquel Mateu i Pla, where turn to the left to go to cross, by a tunnel, the highway and the road To-2. From here, to the right it begins a track of earth (transitable for cars) that advances between some fields of olivos and the highway.
