The itinerary visits a part of the section of the Way of Santiago that crosses the Cerdanya. We have chosen one of the most beautiful stretches and simple: what follows the course of the river Segre and goes of the hermitage of the Remei to the sanctuary of Quadres, place that in mediaeval period was also hospital for pilgrims.
The Way of Santiago, first Cultural Itinerary European, has his origin in the peregrinaciones to Santiago de Compostela (Galicia), that began to realise as a result of the discovery of the rests of the apostle Santiago in the 9th century.
The European routes converged in the Pyrenees, where existed two main ways: the navarro, that crossed Roncesvalles, and the Aragonese, that crossed the mountains by Somport and Jaca. Beside these main routes there was a lot of secondary. One of them went in in Catalonia through the collados of the Perxa and Pimorent, and arrived to Sant Jaume of Rigolisa, in Puigcerdà, capital of the region of the Cerdanya.
All these ways continue valid and are quite transitados, especially in the saint years of Santiago, that celebrate whenever the day of the Saint (25 July) falls in Sunday, as it occurred in the 2004. The Way of Santiago goes through important populations, like Llívia (that it has one of the most ancient pharmacies of Europe), Puigcerdà (commercial and historical location), Bolvir (romance church of Santa Cecília), Bellver (that it offers a lot of possibilities for the practice of the hiking: Way of the Good Men, Route of the Segadores, GR 150…) or Martinet.
During the 13th and 14th centuries, the sanctuary of Quadres was considered like a domus hospitalis, a hospital of travellers. The primitive building was of the 12th century, although in the 17th century built a new temple. The archaeologic excavations have allowed to take out to the light some elements of the ancient romance building, between them two windows. From Bellver is worthwhile to approach to Santa Eugènia of Nerellà, with a romance church declared Historical Monument-Artistic that conserves the only bell tower of tower of style lombardo integer of the region. This bell tower has an inclination of 1,25 metres, by what knows it to him like the “tower of Step ceretana”.
From Puigcerdà, take the road N-260 to The Seu d'Urgell. In followed arrive to Bolvir of Cerdanya. We turn to the right by the first bifurcation to the village and immediately follow the sign that indicates «Tower of the Remei». After visiting 50 metres find the hermitage of the Remei, where can leave the car; also we can continue some 50 metres more, going past of the entrance of the hotel Tower of the Remei, and park in a descampado that there is in front.
