In the extreme NE of Catalonia, in the sector designated Empordà, door of entrance to Europe by road (The Jonquera) and by railway (Portbou), as well as by sea, find us with one of the landscapes of beauty more rugged and had an accident of the Costa Brava, because of the imponente presence of the last estribaciones of the Pyrenees –the Saw of the Albera, space protected, and the Natural Park of the Cap of Creus–, that fall sharply on the plain ampurdanesa and on the sea, forming a coast recortada and rocky, in which they open small calas and natural ports where assent the populations.
The most spectacular appearances find them in the peninsula of the Cap of Creus, that adentra in the sea 10 km and forms an extremely articulated seaboard, of deep waters, with high cliffs, islotes and reefs of rocks descarnadas by the erosion and the winds, and lovely panoramic with recónditas calas of accessible transparent waters only by sea.
The viñedos and olivares trepan by the mountainous slopes through bancales or terraces sustained by walls of dry stone. In the shelters of the coast find small fleets pesqueras alternating with sportive ports.
The first coastal population from the border francoespañola is Portbou, that formed , from 1878, in a small cala (at present with a small sportive jetty) around the international station of railway. It follows him Colera, sailor and tourist population, with sportive port; in the neighbouring population of Rabós find the beautiful rests of the monastery benedictino of Sant Quirze of Colera, romance. And afterwards Llançà, near of the coast, with interesting traditional architecture and a modern maritime neighbourhood, The Port of Llançà, with an extensive beach of sand and sportive port, that is an encouraged tourist centre. Cadaqués In a big open bay in the sector north of the peninsula of the Cap of Creus, is the sailor population of The Port of Selva, traditional fishing port and sportive, beautiful popular architecture and an attractive landscape sung by poets and writers (Foix, Sagarra).
In the mountains that dominate it, with an extraordinary panoramic on the gulf de León, raises one of the monumental groups more stood out and singulars of the romance art Catalan, the ancient monastery benedictino of Sant Pere of Rodes, totally restored, that has constructive and decorative elements of art carolingio and califal and predominance of the romance lombardo of the s. XI. Cadaqués, south of the own peninsula of the Cap of Creus, at the end of a bay, on the soil of blackboard grisáceo that surrounds it, stands out by his singular beauty and personality. It attracted to diverse intellectual and artists from finals of the s. XIX (Picasso did some famous cloths cubistas in 1910), but was Salvador Dalí the one who gave him, already in the years twenty of the past century, international prestige with the big figures of the surrealismo (Éluard, Magritte, Duchamp, Man Ray, Buñuel, García Lorca). From his house of Portlligat, in the outskirts of the population, today opened to the public, continuous giving celebrity to Cadaqués.
It is interesting the popular architecture of the ancient helmet, dominated by the church, with a very beautiful baroque altarpiece of J. Moretó And P. Coast (s. XVIII), where annually celebrates the International Festival of Music. The art of avant-garde is present in the galleries of art and in the new edificaciones, whereas the popular traditions –kitchen, sardanas– are supported by vitality.
