The GR 20, situated in the French island of Córcega, is a footpath of big route that crosses the island of northwest to sureste in a very hard GR of mountain with a length of some 180 kilometres and more than 22.000 metres of desnivel accumulated.
It joins the villages of Calenzana, northwest, with the village of Conca, southeast, and passes in his whole inside the Regional Natural Park of Córcega.
The GR-20 create in the decade of the 70, with the idea to create a way that advanced by the divisional line of the oriental hydrographic basins and western of the island. But until the creation of the Natural Park of Córcega the year 1972 no gave him the definite impulse with the signaling and conditioning of the shelters.
It is considered one of the GR more beautiful of Europe and also one of the hardest of all the continent. Good part of the senderistas abandon in the first stages what puts in evidence the big exigencia physical and mental of this route. Take into account that it has some 180 Km. Of length, with a desnivel accumulated of 22.000 metres, to this add him some steps and aerial stages with quite a lot of difficulty and prepare it with a heat sofocante if you do it during the months of summer.
This route can realise in roughly between 10 and 15 stages and in any one of the two senses of the course, but it is necessary to take into account that the hardest stretches of mountain find them in the half north.
The French guides propose the route in sense of north to south in 15 days. The only guide written in Spanish, realises it in reverse sense and in so alone 10 stages.
We decide to do it to “the French”, that is to say of North to South and in 15 stages. We think that it was a big tarpaulin put that of another way are convinced that you had not been able to finish it whole and sometime had died” in the attempt.
Quotation aside deserve the shelters corsos: badly instrumented, quite dirty, without blankets, and in general very neglected. The food inside the average of the rest of services, bad and scarce. By not speaking of the «friendliness» of save them… all an experience!
You can find more information on the shelters of the GR-20 in the page web of Natural Park: http://www.parc-corse.org/. In this same web, can realise the reservations in the refuguios, although anybody ensures you that once done and paid the reservation cuendo arrive to the shelter have the square reserved.
