The “Ilha Blue” is known with this sobrenombre by the big quantity of fences of hortensias that find by all the island and is, without place to doubts, the most charming of the islands of the Azores. His form is of irregular pentagon and covers a surface of roughly 173 m2 (21 km of length by 14 km of width) what turns it into the fifth elder of the Azores. The distances to his neighbouring islands are of 7 km to Beak, 19 km to Sãorjorge , 85 km to Funny and 124 km to Terceira.

Geographically, the island is dominated by a big crater of some 2 km of diameter and 400 m of depth known like the Caldeira, of soft slopes interrupted by secondary volcanic trainings and where find the highest mountain of the island, the Cabeço Fat a volcano in rest from 1672 with an altitude of 1,043 m.

Anyway, the main attraction of Faial is definitely his capital, Horta. A charming location with a famous sportive port and rich architectural heritage. Probably the most active city of the archipelago with an air decididamente cosmopolita.
