The Vesubio has a height of 1.270 m, Situated in the bay of Naples, in Campania, Italy. It is an active volcano of type of compound cone vesubiano, to the that gives name. It characterises for alternating eruptions of piroclastos with eruptions of coladas lávicas, giving place to a superposición in strata that does that this type of volcanos achieve big dimensions.

It is a characteristic mountain «jorobada», consistent in a Big Cono partially surrounded by the rugged edge of the summit boiler caused by the landslide of previous periods, and originally was higher. This structure is called Mountain Somma.

The Big Cono originated during the eruption of the year 79. For this reason, the volcano is also called Somma-Vesuvius or Somma-Vesubio.

The boiler began to form during an eruption does some 17.000 years, expanded by ancient and violent eruptions concluding with the one of the 79. This structure has taken his name of the term «volcano somma», which describes to the volcano with a summit in boiler surrounded of a recent cone.

The height of the main cone has changed constantly by the eruptions, but in the present is of 1.281 m. The Mountain Somma has 1.149 meters above sea level of high, and is separated of the main cone by the valley of Atrium gave Cavallo, of some 5 km of extension. The slopes of the mountain are marked by the flows of lava, with a lot of vegetation, with thickets in high heights and viñedos in the drops. The Vesubio is an active volcano, although his common activity produce more than at all steam emanated from the cracks to the foot of the crater.

It is the only volcano of firm earth of the European continent that has had eruptions in the last one hundred years, although in the actuality is not in eruption. The others two Italian volcanos, the Etna and the Strómboli find in islands.

It is to some 9 km to the east of Naples and to short distance of the bank of the mar. Stands out visualmente in the landscape that presents the bay of Naples, seen from the sea, with Naples in first plane.
